What Happens After Weight Loss Surgery?

Understanding Tonic’s Comprehensive Aftercare: What to Expect Post-Weight Loss Surgery

When researching weight loss surgery, chances are you see lots of talk about the benefits of weight loss surgery and the difference it can make to people’s lives. This is important to know, but you also need to understand the aftercare process in order to make an informed decision.

In this blog, we’ll be talking about Tonic’s aftercare process and what you can expect if you have surgery with us. Not every provider includes aftercare in their price, so make sure to do your research before committing to any weight loss surgery.

First up, let’s talk about what happens after your weight loss surgery.

Weight loss surgery is a tool, creating a healthier lifestyle after surgery is just as vital as the surgery itself.

Fortunately, if you have your weight loss surgery with Tonic, you’ll have access to our world-leading 5-year aftercare, where you’ll have a team of nurses, surgeons, personal trainers and other weight-loss experts by your side, helping you live a happier, healthier life.

While everyone’s journey is unique, and can vary, here’s what an average post-surgery process looks like with Tonic:

1. 1-7 days post op

Once you have been discharged & arrive home, the following day (Mon-Fri) you will receive a call from your Tonic nurse, they will call you every day for the first 5 days

At the 7 day mark you will be accepted into the Tonic private Facebook community group & your complimentary patient tool Kit will be sent to you.

2. 1-4 weeks post op

The aftercare coordinator will make contact with you once a week for 4 weeks to check on your recovery & answer any questions you may have. The dietitian will call you at 7-10 days post op then again at around 3 weeks post op to ensure you’re coping with your ongoing diet.

3. 5-11 weeks post op

You will be placed into our monthly system. The aftercare coordinators will contact you once a month to check in on your progression & see if you require any support from the aftercare team members.

4. 3-23 months post op

You will receive a check in from the dietitian & the fitness coach to offer help & support.

The aftercare team will organise your 1st post-operative appointment with your surgeon, to discuss how you’re doing and the progression of your recovery.

5. 24 months+

Each year until you reach 5 years you will receive a yearly telephone review with your surgeon. They will check on your progress and offer support & advice.

Remember: throughout this entire process, you can contact any member of the Tonic team for further support – you’re never alone with Tonic!

How will I feel after weight loss surgery?

We think the best way to understand how you might feel after your weight loss surgery is by hearing it directly from a Tonic patient! This is what Ally had to say about her life after surgery:

“I have lost over 10 stone and I feel absolutely incredible. I would never have dreamt to have the life that I currently have now. I go out more, I spend a lot more time outdoors with my daughter, I go to the gym, I never turn down an invitation to go out. I spend far too much money on clothes but it’s a small price to pay for what I have got for the rest of my life. I can’t say any more times how much this has changed my life. I am not the person I used to be 9 months ago. I just want to say thank you to Tonic because you have given me back my life.”

You can see more of Ally’s transformation here:

Here are some other things that weight loss surgery patients report after their surgery:

“I can do things I couldn’t do before”

Kirsten had lots of things she always wanted to do, but couldn’t before her weight, like ziplining.

Following her weight loss, she decided that she was going to tick ziplining off of her bucket list – great to hear, Kirsten!

“I’ve got more energy than before”

Almost every Tonic patient reported having much, much more energy than they did before their surgery.

This is down to a combination of things: a better diet and less weight to carry around.

“I feel better – my mental health has improved”

Another very common feeling after weight loss surgery is improved mental health.

People like what they see in the mirror; their weight isn’t on their mind like it used to be. Weight loss surgery can have a profoundly positive impact on your mental health, especially if you’ve struggled with self-esteem issues in the past.

“I don’t feel intimidated by the gym anymore”

Claire says that she feels like “one of the gym girls” after her surgery, this is a common sentiment for many people post-surgery!

The gym can be very intimidating, especially if you’re overweight. However, it’s worth noting that everyone starts somewhere. It can be difficult, it can be intimidating, but anyone can go to the gym, regardless of their weight!

“I’ve got less aches and pains”

Joint pain is very common before you lose weight.

Many people report significantly less aches and pains after their weight loss.

“My clothes don’t feel frumpy!”

“Frumpiness” – our mortal enemy!

Many of us feel frumpy in our clothes from time to time, but this feeling is only heightened if you are overweight.

It’s normal to feel unhappy with how you look on occasion, but after surgery, lots of Tonic patients tell us that they’re much happier with the clothes they can wear now, which is great to hear!

“I can chase my kids around”

Hannah, and many other parents post-op, are delighted to be able to play with their children in ways they never could before!

“I chase my kids around, and join in with all their fun!”

We love hearing this, as we know just how important these memories are for children!

“I feel more bubbly and confident”

Confidence is so, so important for everyone; we all deserve to feel good in our skin.

For many, weight loss surgery gives them their confidence back, allowing them to live their life to the fullest.

“I should have done this 10/15/20 years ago.”

The main thing we hear from our patients post-op?

“I should have done this years ago.”

There’s no time like the present. If you’re considering weight loss surgery, and you’d like to talk with a specialist to learn more about your options, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our friendly team at Tonic!

All of our surgeries can be paid for monthly, spreading the cost and allowing you to take back control of your life. You’ll also enjoy 5 years of premium aftercare and support from our team of bariatric (weight loss) experts.

We can’t wait to hear from you!
